Chapter 25 - The Wolf in Executive ClothingAn hour later, Erin stood inside the sprawling executive office of Richard Vance on the 50th floor of the Vanguard Capital building.

Richard Vance sat behind a mahogany desk overlooking Central Park, a glass of twenty-year-old scotch in his hand. He looked up, offering a suave, fatherly smile that did not reach his cold grey eyes.

"Erin, my dear," Richard said smoothly, standing up. "I heard about the terrifying incident at the Plaza. Terrible, absolutely terrible. I’ve already spoken to the police commissioner to ensure that Reed woman never sees the light of day."

"Save it, Richard," Erin snapped, closing the double doors behind her. "I know about the Delaware holding company."

Richard’s smile faltered for a microsecond before smoothing back into place. "I’m afraid I don't follow."

"Sophia Reed didn't track me down on her own," Erin said, stepping slowly toward his desk. "She didn't buy that gun on the black market. You fed her the security blueprints for the Plaza. You leaked my itinerary to her. You gave her the gun, hoping she’d eliminate me before the state judiciary board finalized my appointment."

Richard took a slow sip of his scotch, setting the crystal glass down on a marble coaster with a deliberate clink.

"And why," Richard asked softly, his posture shifting into something predatory, "would a senior founding partner of a billion-dollar firm care about a legal advocate?"

"Because three years ago, before Alexander cheated on me, he didn't act alone," Erin declared, her dark eyes burning into his. "Alexander was embezzling client funds, yes—but he was doing it for you. You were using him as a fall guy for a multi-hundred-million-dollar offshore money-laundering ring!"
