Chapter 4 - The Iron Lady at the TableIn the penthouse suite of the Winslow Hotel, Claire Marlowe sat at a sleek glass desk, surrounded by financial statements, asset valuation reports, and digital tablets.

Across from her sat Daniel Mercer, a cup of black coffee steaming between his weathered hands.
"The board has accepted the preliminary findings of the audit, Claire," Daniel said, adjusting his spectacles. "Sienna Brooks wasn't just Dominic's mistress. She was his financial conduit. Over the past four months, she has processed nearly twelve million dollars in unauthorized consulting fees routed through three different shell companies registered in the Cayman Islands."
Claire didn't blink. She traced the edge of a digital tablet displaying the corporate flowcharts.
"Twelve million," Claire murmured. "And what were these consulting fees supposedly paying for?"
"Ghost properties in Miami and luxury real estate acquisitions in the Hamptons," Daniel replied, sliding a certified document across the desk. "All signed off by Dominic under expedited procurement clauses—the exact clauses you warned him about six weeks ago."
"He bypassed compliance because he thought he was untouchable," Claire said coldly. "He thought the Marlowe name made him immune to the very laws I spent twenty years writing for him."
A soft chime sounded from the laptop on the desk.
"We have an incoming video transmission from the main lobby downstairs," Daniel noted, raising an eyebrow. "It seems your husband has finally tracked you down."
Claire looked at the live camera feed displayed on her screen.
Dominic stood in the lobby of the Winslow Hotel, looking fierce, desperate, and dangerously out of place. Two hotel security guards were currently blocking his path, though they looked visibly terrified of the legendary mafia boss standing before them.
"Put him on speaker, Daniel," Claire instructed calmly.
Daniel tapped a key on the console.
"Claire," Dominic’s voice boomed through the speakers of the laptop, rough with restrained fury and panic. "I know you're in that hotel. Open the damn door. We need to talk like adults."
Claire leaned back in her leather chair, her dark eyes fixed on the camera lens.
"You are standing in a public lobby, Dominic," Claire said, her voice cutting through the speaker with absolute, glacial precision. "And you are speaking to the woman who owns forty-two percent of the voting shares in Marlowe Holdings, and holds absolute proxy over the remaining independent board seats."
There was a sharp intake of breath on the other end.
"Claire, stop this madness," Dominic demanded, his tone shifting from pleading to commanding. "You’re locking me out of my own empire over a personal mistake. You know how these things work in our world—men in my position have distractions. It doesn't mean anything."
"A distraction?" Claire laughed—a short, brittle sound devoid of warmth. "You brought a woman into our bed, Dominic. You funded her lifestyle with corporate capital I protected with my sweat and blood. You mistook my absence for weakness, and my loyalty for surrender."
"Claire—"

"You have twenty-four hours to vacate the Manhattan penthouse," Claire interrupted, her voice dropping an octave into pure ice. "Deliver your resignation as Chairman of the Board by tomorrow morning at nine. If you refuse, I will hand the forensic audit directly to the Department of Justice and the SEC. Let's see how untouchable you feel when federal indictments start dropping on your desk."
She clicked the mouse, terminating the call.
