Chapter 5 - The Underworld CollapsesThe news hit Wall Street and the New York criminal underworld simultaneously like a localized earthquake.

The New York Times financial desk ran an emergency headline by noon: MARLENE HOLDINGS FROZEN AMID SUDDEN EXECUTIVE AUDIT; FOUNDER CLAIRE MARLENE ASSUMES TEMPORARY CONTROL.

For the old-guard capos and syndicate bosses who still answered to the Marlowe name, the news was incomprehensible. Dominic Marlowe was supposed to be the invincible titan, the untouchable don who bridged the gap between modern corporate respectability and old-school family dominance. But the streets were whispering a terrifying new reality: The king didn't run the empire. The queen did.

Dominic sat in the back of his darkened bulletproof Maybach parked outside a private social club in Little Italy, rubbing his temples as his phone buzzed continuously with panic-stricken calls from syndicate associates and terrified board members.

"Boss," Aaron Cole said softly from the driver's seat, watching the rearview mirror with acute anxiety. "The capos from the Brooklyn docks are asking for a sit-down. They heard the shipping ports are under compliance review. If the federal auditors start digging into the secondary manifests, half of our import-export operations are going to be exposed."

Dominic stared out the tinted window at the gray rain-soaked pavement. He had spent his entire life believing that power came from fear, from a loaded gun, a signed contract in blood, and the inherited weight of a feared last name. He had never understood that the true power—the foundation that kept him out of a federal penitentiary and allowed him to sit at the table with senators—was built entirely on the legal architecture constructed by his wife.

"Where is she, Aaron?" Dominic asked, his voice hollow.

"She’s still at the Winslow, sir," Aaron replied carefully. "She hasn't left the suite. Daniel Mercer has been filing injunctions all morning. She’s systematically dismantling every corporate safety net you ever had."

Dominic gripped the leather steering wheel so hard his knuckles turned white. He had thought Claire was just a brilliant lawyer he had fallen in love with a decade ago in the rain. He had forgotten that she was the architect who had built his golden cage—and she held the keys to lock him inside it forever.
