Chapter 6 - The Uninvited Guest in the SuiteThe evening shadows lengthened across Manhattan, casting long, bruised streaks of purple and gray across the New York skyline.

Claire stood by the window of her hotel suite, sipping a cup of green tea, when a sharp, authoritative knock echoed at the heavy oak door.
Daniel looked up from his laptop. "Should I get security?"
"No," Claire said, her eyes narrowing slightly as she stared at the peephole. "It’s just him."
She walked over and unlocked the door, pulling it open.
Dominic stood in the doorway. He looked different than he had twenty-four hours ago. The arrogant, untouchable billionaire veneer had cracked. His tailored suit was slightly rumpled, his tie loosened, and his eyes carried the haunted, desperate look of a man who realized he had just gambled his entire kingdom on a roll of the dice and lost everything.
"May I come in?" Dominic asked, his voice unusually quiet.
Claire didn't move. She stood blocking the threshold, her posture rigid, her gaze unflinching.
"You have about thirty seconds to give me a reason why I shouldn't call hotel security and have you thrown out into the street, Dominic," Claire said evenly.
Dominic swallowed hard, taking a slow step forward, though he respected her boundary enough not to cross the threshold uninvited.
"I didn't come here to fight, Claire," he said, his voice raw. "I came to tell you that I tendered my resignation to the board ten minutes ago."
Claire’s eyes flickered with a brief flash of surprise, though her expression remained locked in stone. "You stepped down?"
"Sienna is gone," Dominic continued, his gaze locked onto hers with desperate intensity. "I packed her bags myself, put her in a cab, and cut off every financial tie before noon. The forensic audit can dig as deep as it wants. There are no more shell companies, no more unauthorized transfers. I handed the keys of the operational board over to Daniel."
"You finally realized you couldn't bully your way out of this one," Claire replied coldly.
"I realized something much worse," Dominic whispered, taking a half-step closer. "I realized that without you, I am nothing. I thought Marlowe Holdings was my legacy. I thought the power, the money, the name—that was what made me who I am. But standing in that empty penthouse today, looking at the room where you slept, the clothes you left behind, the life you built for me... I realized I was just a tenant in a kingdom you constructed with your own hands."
Claire felt a sharp, painful ache bloom deep in her chest—the stubborn, lingering ghost of a love she had spent the last twenty-four hours trying to bury under layers of legal retribution.
"You built a magnificent kingdom, Dominic," Claire said, her voice trembling slightly despite her best efforts to keep it steady. "And then you invited someone else to sit on the throne while I was out saving your life. Do you really expect me to just forgive that because you finally decided to apologize?"
"No," Dominic said softly, his eyes shining with an unmistakable vulnerability that no reporter or rival syndicate boss had ever witnessed. "I don't expect forgiveness. I just want you to know... I never stopped loving you. Even when I was an arrogant fool."
Before Claire could respond, her phone on the desk buzzed violently, shattering the fragile silence between them.

Daniel picked it up, glanced at the screen, and his face turned instantly pale.
"Claire," Daniel said, his voice dropping into a tone of urgent alarm. "You need to see this. The federal marshals just raided the secondary warehouse in Brooklyn. And they didn't come alone."
