Chapter 14 - The Unseen WitnessDominic stood up, sweeping his gaze across the terrified faces of the remaining board members.

“The board is dissolved,” Dominic announced, his voice echoing off the glass walls. “Effective immediately, all executive powers revert to me. Anyone who wishes to resign may do so before the federal marshals enter the building. Anyone who stays will work under a very different set of rules.”
Not a single director moved. They sat frozen like statues, waiting for the axe to fall.
Dominic turned away from them, walking slowly toward the floor-to-ceiling windows that overlooked the sprawling harbor below. The morning fog was finally lifting, revealing the vast empire of ships, cranes, and containers stretching out to the horizon.
He didn't look back at the room. He looked at me, standing near the doorway, still holding my nurse’s bag.
“Clara,” he called out softly.
The directors all turned their heads, their eyes landing on me in sudden, bewildered confusion. The mysterious woman standing beside the most dangerous man in Boston.
“Come here,” Dominic commanded gently.
I hesitated for a fraction of a second, then walked across the polished marble floor, stopping right beside him at the edge of the glass.
“You brought me here to watch you conquer your enemies,” I murmured quietly, so only he could hear.
“I brought you here,” Dominic corrected, turning to face me fully, his dark eyes softening as he looked down into mine, “because an empire means nothing if there’s no one left to share the sunrise with.”

Before I could answer, the heavy boardroom doors swung open again.
Federal agents swarmed into the room, led by a high-ranking official holding a warrant for Arthur Vance’s immediate arrest. But as the agents entered, they didn't look at Dominic with suspicion; they looked at him with deference.
