Chapter 15 - Shadows of the PastTwo weeks later, the chaos at Mercy West Medical Center had been quietly buried under layers of nondisclosures and federal red tape.

I no longer worked the night shift in Room 412.
Instead, I found myself standing on the wraparound balcony of a sprawling penthouse overlooking the Boston coastline, holding a cup of black coffee that I hadn't made myself.
The penthouse belonged to Dominic. It was a fortress of glass, steel, and minimalist art, secured by biometric locks and guarded by private personnel. Yet, despite the luxury, it felt surprisingly empty until the heavy oak doors clicked open.
Footsteps echoed across the hardwood floor.
Dominic stepped out onto the balcony, wearing a dark cashmere sweater, the fresh scars on his face fading into rugged lines that only added to his striking, intimidating presence.
He walked up behind me, wrapping his arms securely around my waist and resting his chin on my shoulder.
“You’re thinking about the hospital again,” he murmured, his breath warm against my neck.
“I’m thinking about how strange life is,” I admitted, leaning back against his chest, letting the solid warmth of him anchor me. “Two weeks ago, I was just a foster kid changing IV lines and reading The Art of War to a man who couldn't blink. Now... I’m standing in a billionaire's penthouse while federal agents dismantle a global cartel.”
Dominic chuckled, a low, rich sound that vibrated through my entire body. He turned me around slowly so I was facing him, his hands resting firmly on my hips.
“You were never just a nurse, Clara,” he said, his voice dropping to a low, intense register. “You were the spark that dragged me out of the dark. When I was trapped inside my own body—unable to move, unable to speak, listening to the machines keep me breathing—your voice was the only thing that kept me anchored to this world.”
He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, velvet box.
My breath hitched.
“Dominic...” I whispered.

“Eighty-nine days of silence,” Dominic continued, his dark eyes burning with absolute devotion. “And the only thing I wanted when I woke up was to make sure you never left my side. Stay with me, Clara. Not as a guest, not as a chapter in my past. Stay as my equal.”
He flipped the box open. Inside sat a stunning, custom-designed ring featuring a deep, midnight-blue sapphire flanked by diamonds—a reflection of the harbor storm where our lives had forever collided.
