Chapter 4 - Blood and StrategyUsing every ounce of foster-home survival instinct I had accumulated, I slammed my shoulder directly into the IV pole, hurling the heavy metal stand straight into the assassin’s legs.

The man stumbled forward, his shot going wide, shattering the glass of the medical supply cabinet.

“Clara, drop!” Dominic roared.

Even hooked up to an IV line that was tearing away from his skin, Dominic exploded into motion. With terrifying precision, he reached out, grabbed the heavy metal bedside tray table, and swung it with both arms like a baseball bat directly into the side of the assassin’s helmet.

The man crashed sideways into the wall, collapsing unconscious onto the floor.

I stood there, hyperventilating, staring at Dominic. Blood was pouring freely from his reopened surgical wounds, soaking his hospital gown in dark crimson, but he didn't even flinch. He looked like an ancient war god dragged straight out of the underworld.

“You’re bleeding!” I cried out, rushing forward with a stack of sterile gauze. “You’re going to kill yourself!”

“We’re already dead if we stay here,” Dominic panted, his face pale from blood loss, though his eyes remained fiercely alive. He kicked the metal lockbox open with his bare foot. Inside wasn't money or documents—it was a heavy satellite phone and a sleek, titanium-plated firearm.

Dominic snatched the satellite phone, punched in a rapid numerical sequence with one hand, and pressed it to his ear.

“Vanguard One. Status,” he barked into the receiver.

A crisp voice answered immediately through the static. “Boss? My God... we thought you were gone. The board locked us out of the port systems twenty minutes ago. An internal hostile takeover is underway.”

“Gather the loyalists. Secure the private docks at Pier 44. I’m coming home,” Dominic growled. He ended the call, tossed the satellite phone to me, and grabbed my wrist once more.

“Can you drive a manual transmission, Clara?” he asked, his gaze burning into mine.

“Yes,” I stammered. “My foster brother taught me on an old truck, but—”

“Good,” he interrupted, flashing a wicked, desperate smile. “Because you’re about to chauffeuring a wanted billionaire away from an execution squad.”
