Chapter 18 - Echoes in the DarkThat evening, back in the penthouse, the city lights flickered to life across Boston like a million scattered diamonds.

I sat on the edge of our oversized bed, flipping through the pages of an old, dog-eared paperback copy of The Art of War.

Dominic walked into the bedroom, buttoning down a fresh shirt, and paused when he saw the book in my hands. A slow, knowing smile spread across his face.

He walked over, sat down beside me on the mattress, and gently pulled the book from my hands, placing it on the nightstand.

“You’re still reading that?” he teased softly.

“I like to make sure my strategy is sharper than yours,” I retorted, leaning my head against his shoulder.

Dominic wrapped his arm around me, pulling me close, pressing a warm kiss into the top of my head. The silence between us wasn't heavy anymore; it was comfortable, warm, and filled with a quiet strength that neither of us would ever take for granted again.

“What chapter are we on now?” he whispered against my hair.

I smiled into the darkness of the room, closing my eyes and listening to the steady, strong rhythm of his heartbeat beneath my cheek.

“The best one,” I whispered back.
