Chapter 1 - Unearthing the Evidence

The flashing red and blue lights illuminated the front yard, casting eerie shadows across the driveway. Rachel’s shrieks echoed through the night as two police officers forced her into the back of the cruiser. Her face was contorted in fury, her mascara running down her cheeks, but nobody in the neighborhood offered a shred of sympathy.
Michael stood on the porch, holding Emma tightly against his chest. The four-year-old’s small frame was still shivering, her trembling fingers clutching his jacket like a lifeline. Her tiny hands were still stained red from the harsh dish soap and cold water.
"Mr. Sterling," Detective Miller called out, walking down the steps from the back porch. He was a seasoned investigator with cold gray eyes and a hardened expression. "We searched the perimeter and the dog house as you requested. We found the blanket and the stuffed rabbit."
"Is that enough to keep her locked up?" Michael asked, his voice low and deadly serious. "She put a four-year-old child in a wooden box in the middle of the night."
"It’s child endangerment and abuse, without a doubt," Detective Miller replied. "But Mr. Sterling... there’s something else. When my officer pulled out that pink blanket from inside the dog house, he noticed the floorboards were uneven."
Michael froze. "What do you mean?"
"There was a false bottom inside the dog house," Detective Miller said, pulling a plastic evidence bag from his coat pocket. Inside was a small, high-definition camera with a wide-angle lens, along with a power bank wired through the back frame. "This wasn’t just a punishment spot. Someone installed a live-streaming hidden camera inside that wooden box. It’s been transmitting footage to an encrypted offshore server."
Michael felt the blood drain from his face. Rachel hadn't just been abusing his daughter in a fit of rage—she was recording it. But why?

"Daddy..." Emma whispered softly, rubbing her tired eyes. "Is Aunt Rachel coming back?"
"No, sweetheart," Michael swore, kissing her forehead. "She is never coming near you again."
