Chapter 6 - The Courtroom Ambush

The following morning, Michael didn't wait for the police to act slowly through bureaucratic red tape. He launched a surprise legal strike.

Using the audio recording and the toxicology reports from St. Jude’s Hospital, Michael’s attorney filed an emergency petition at the state supreme court to revoke Rachel’s bail and issue immediate arrest warrants for Eleanor Sterling for conspiracy to commit attempted murder.

The courtroom was packed with news reporters and high-profile lawyers. Rachel sat at the defense table, wearing a designer suit, looking smug and confident next to her attorney, Marcus Vance. Eleanor sat in the gallery behind her, looking stoic and aristocratic.

"Your Honor," Marcus Vance argued smugly to the judge, "these accusations are nothing more than a mudslinging campaign by my client’s stepbrother to deny her rightful inheritance share. The so-called 'dog house incident' was an isolated misunderstanding."

"Is that so, Mr. Vance?" Michael’s attorney, David, stood up calmly. "Then perhaps you can explain this."

David connected his laptop to the courtroom monitors. The display lit up with the live security footage recovered from the false bottom of the dog house, showing Rachel violently shoving four-year-old Emma into the freezing wooden box in the dead of night, ignoring her screams and cries.

Gasps erupted across the courtroom. Reporters began furiously scribbling in their notebooks.

"And furthermore, Your Honor," David continued, pressing a button, "here is the toxicology report proving heavy metal poisoning administered over a three-week period, alongside audio files recovered from the suspect's own possession."

The audio played through the courtroom speakers. Rachel’s own voice explicitly detailing the plan to poison Emma and steal the $50 million trust echoed off the marble walls.

Rachel’s face drained of all color. Eleanor stood up in the gallery, her eyes wide with terror, attempting to slip out the back exit.

"Officers!" the judge thundered, slamming his gavel down so hard it nearly cracked the wood. "Revoke defendant Rachel’s bail immediately! Put her in cuffs! And arrest that woman at the back door for criminal conspiracy!"

Two bailiffs tackled Eleanor before she could reach the doors. Rachel screamed as hand-cuffs snapped around her wrists once more.
