Chapter 11 - The Shadow in the Will

Six months of peace shattered on a rain-slicked Tuesday afternoon.
Michael stood at his office window in the Sterling Enterprises skyscraper, watching the city below. Emma was downstairs in the company daycare, painting pictures of her new playhouse. For the first time in years, Michael felt his shoulders unlock from the perpetual tension of danger.
Then, his private line rang. It was Arthur’s long-time estate attorney, Jonathan Vance, calling from an unlisted number.
"Michael, you need to lock your office door right now," Jonathan’s voice was breathless, ragged with pure panic. "I’m in the basement parking garage. Do not let anyone into your floor."
"Jonathan? What are you talking about? The criminal trials ended last month. Rachel and Eleanor are behind bars."
"They were pawn pieces, Michael!" Jonathan slammed his car door on the audio line. "Arthur’s original 1998 codicil... it had a sleeper clause. It wasn't activated by Emma's age or your custody. It was triggered by Eleanor's conviction!"
Before Michael could respond, the heavy mahogany doors of his executive suite clicked open.
A tall man in a bespoke charcoal suit walked into the room. He had slicked-back silver hair, cold blue eyes, and a face that mirrored Michael’s father in a terrifyingly exact way. Behind him stood two legal representatives holding thick velvet-bound binders.
"Step away from the desk, nephew," the man said, his voice smooth as poured lead. "You're sitting in my chair."
Michael slowly lowered his phone. "Who the hell are you?"

The stranger pulled a gold pocket watch from his vest—Arthur's favorite watch, the one that had vanished on the night of his death.
"I am Damian Sterling," the man smiled, revealing sharp, perfectly white teeth. "Your father’s elder half-brother. And as of twenty minutes ago, by order of the international probate court in Geneva, I am the sole trustee of Sterling Enterprises and legal guardian of all Sterling heirs."
