Chapter 5 - The Grand Scheme

The pieces of the puzzle were finally falling into place, revealing a sinister web of greed and deceit.

Five years ago, Michael’s father, the billionaire industrialist Arthur Sterling, had passed away. In his final will and testament, Arthur had left the vast majority of the Sterling fortune—a $50 million irrevocable trust fund—to his first grandchild: Emma.

However, Arthur had included a specific, ironclad clause in the estate documents: If Emma were to die, become permanently incapacitated, or if Michael was proven in a court of law to be guilty of extreme child neglect, legal guardianship of Emma—and control over the $50 million trust—would revert entirely to Arthur’s surviving wife, Eleanor, and her biological daughter, Rachel.

"They didn't just want to hurt Emma," Michael said, his hands clenching into tight fists. "They were systematically destroying her health to manufacture a legal case of neglect against me. Rachel was acting as the inside operative while I was away expanding the family business!"

"And if you were deemed negligent by Child Protective Services," Miller added, "Eleanor would step in as the 'rescuing grandmother,' claim legal custody, and take full control of the $50 million."

"Where is Evelyn in all of this?" Michael demanded. "Her name was mentioned on that recording."

Before Miller could answer, Michael’s phone rang with an unknown international number. He pressed speakerphone.

"Hello, Michael," a smooth, chillingly familiar woman’s voice whispered over the line.

"Evelyn," Michael spat, his voice laced with venom.

"You always were too smart for your own good, darling," Evelyn laughed coldly. "You should have just let Rachel do her job. Now things are going to get... much messier."
