Chapter 2 - The Poisoned Trail

The next morning, Michael took Emma straight to St. Jude Children’s Hospital for a comprehensive medical evaluation. While Emma was in the pediatric wing being examined by nurses who lavished her with color books and warm milk, Michael waited in the private office of Dr. Harrison, the chief of pediatrics.
Dr. Harrison walked in, his expression solemn as he flipped through Emma’s lab results.
"How is she, Doctor?" Michael asked, standing up immediately. "Aside from the physical exhaustion and the hand irritation?"
"The skin inflammation on her hands will heal with topical ointment," Dr. Harrison said carefully. "However, her blood work revealed something concerning, Michael. We ran a full toxicology panel as standard procedure for physical abuse cases."
Michael’s heart hammered against his ribs. "What did you find?"
"Trace amounts of thallium and heavy sedative compounds in her bloodstream," Dr. Harrison revealed. "Not enough to be immediately fatal, but enough to cause severe fatigue, confusion, and physical weakness over time. Someone has been secretly dosing her food or drinks for weeks."
Michael slammed his fist onto the wooden desk, cracking the polished varnish. Rachel had been slowly poisoning his daughter. The forced chores, the cold water, the locked dog house—it wasn't just cruel discipline. Rachel was intentionally breaking down Emma’s mind and body.

Suddenly, Michael’s phone chimed with an urgent text from Detective Miller: ‘We just traced the offshore server linked to the dog house camera. Monthly payments of $20,000 were funding that feed. The account belongs to Evelyn Vance.’
Michael stared at the screen, his breath hitching in his throat. Evelyn Vance was Emma’s biological mother—the woman who had abandoned them three years ago and was officially declared dead in an overseas boating accident.
