Chapter 15 - Midnight Heist

Rain poured down in sheets as a unmarked black sedan skidded to a halt in the wooded alley behind Sterling Manor.

Detective Miller stepped out of the driver's side, holding a pair of heavy tactical wire cutters and two silenced pistols. Michael stepped out from the passenger side, his face pale, his arm wrapped tightly in medical bandages to suppress the internal bleeding from the poison.

"You should be in a hospital bed, Sterling," Miller said, cutting through the perimeter iron fence. "If your heart rate spikes over 140, that remaining toxin in your liver will trigger cardiac arrest."

"Then I guess I won't let my heart rate drop," Michael replied grimly, pulling back the slide of his pistol.

They moved like ghosts through the shadows of the estate gardens. Damian’s private guards were stationed at the front gates and main doors, expecting an attack from the driveway. They never anticipated Michael breaking in through the old underground servant tunnels beneath the rose garden.

Navigating the dark, brick-lined tunnels beneath the manor, Michael reached the concealed access door inside his late father's study.

He pushed the wall panel open.

Inside the grand study, lit only by the fireplace, Damian stood at the mahogany desk, filling out transfer papers while Emma sat silently on the leather sofa, her small arms tied softly with a silk scarf to keep her from running.

"Sign here, my dear," Damian whispered, pressing Emma’s tiny finger onto a fingerprint ink pad. "And all of your father's world becomes mine."
