Chapter 2 - The Signatures of War Headline: "He Thought He Got Away With It, But Her New Guardian Signed His Death Warrant!"

For thirty-six hours, Grant Vance enjoyed the illusion of his own grandeur.

He dined on imported oysters and five-hundred-dollar champagne in Vancouver, fully convinced that his life was ascending into the upper echelons of Seattle's elite. He had no idea that back at Harborview Medical Center, his daughter was taking her first unassisted breaths, or that his wife was signing documents that would strip him of everything he owned.

On Wednesday morning, the quiet hum of the NICU was broken by the sharp clack of high heels echoing down the hallway.

I was sitting in a wheelchair beside incubator four, holding my baby girl’s tiny hand through the side port. She was so delicate, her translucent skin flushed with life, her small fingers wrapping tightly around my pinky finger. I had named her Maya.

"Emma!"

The loud, arrogant voice shattered the peaceful room. I turned my head to see Grant bursting through the double doors, looking disheveled, his expensive silk tie loosened, his hair messy. Behind him, Vanessa Cole lagged back, her arms crossed over her designer handbag, looking annoyed rather than remorseful.

"Do you have any idea what you've done?!" Grant roared, stepping toward my wheelchair. "My corporate cards were declined at hotel checkout! The valet said my car was seized by a towing company! And Whitaker’s team completely ghosted our meeting!"

Two tall men in sharp black suits stepped out from the shadows near the incubator, instantly blocking Grant's path. Grant stumbled backward, recognizing them immediately as Noah Whitaker’s personal bodyguards.

"Keep your voice down," I said calmly, my tone colder than the rain outside. "You are in an intensive care unit."

"Don't you dare talk to me like that!" Grant sneered, pointing a trembling finger at me. "You orchestrated this, didn't you? You used that mobster to humiliate me because you were jealous of Vanessa! You ruined the biggest pitch of my life over a little labor pain!"

"A little labor pain?" I looked at him, feeling the final embers of my affection for him turn to cold, dead ash. "Our daughter was born six six weeks early, Grant. She was dying inside me while you were worried about getting rain on your leather seats."

Vanessa stepped forward, her voice dripping with venom. "Oh, please, Emma. Stop playing the martyr. Babies are born early all the time. Grant had a career-defining opportunity, and you used your female drama to sabotage him. Look at him! He worked for two years on Project Aegis!"

A cold laugh escaped my lips. "Project Aegis?" I looked straight at Grant, watching the color slowly drain from his face. "Tell her, Grant. Tell Vanessa who actually wrote the source code for Project Aegis."

Grant swallowed hard, shifting his weight nervously. "Emma, don't start this..."

"I wrote every single line of that logistics algorithm while I was working seventy hours a week to pay off your gambling debts from business school!" I yelled, my voice ringing clear across the room. "You didn't build a company, Grant. You built a house of cards on my work, and you used my love as your foundation."

Before Grant could respond, the heavy wooden doors of the NICU floor opened again. Noah Whitaker walked in, flanked by two attorneys carrying leather briefcases. The sheer pressure of his presence made the entire room grow dead silent.

"Grant Vance," Noah said, his voice smooth as velvet and cold as steel. "You have been officially served."

One of the attorneys stepped forward and handed Grant a thick packet of legal documents.

"What is this?" Grant demanded, his hand shaking as he opened the folder.

"Emergency divorce petition, emergency order for full legal and physical custody of Maya Vance, an asset freezing order covering all shared accounts, and an injunction barring you from within five hundred yards of your wife, your daughter, and Whitaker Enterprises property," the attorney stated calmly.

Grant stared at the papers in disbelief. "This is insane! She can't freeze my accounts! Project Aegis belongs to my firm!"

Noah stepped closer to Grant, leaning down slightly so only Grant could hear his next words, though every word cut through the air like a blade. "Project Aegis belonged to your firm until twelve o'clock today. I bought your company's primary debt from the bank two hours ago, Grant. You are no longer the CEO. You are simply an unemployed squatter in an apartment that my real estate division just bought."
