Chapter 1 - The Doctor's Secret and the Missing Bottle"Mr. Whitaker," the doctor said, her voice dropping to a serious, hushed tone as she motioned for me to step into her sterile office. "Your son experienced an acute, severe bronchospasm triggered by airborne particulate inhalation. In plain terms: something in his immediate environment choked off his airway."

My heart hammered against my ribs. "He was in the kitchen. He was taking a bath in a plastic tub."

"Was there anything else in the sink or the immediate vicinity?" she pressed. "A chemical residue, a cleaning agent, or..." She paused, searching my face. "An unwashed container?"

I replayed the scene in my mind. The warm sunlight. Zion splashing. The ceramic sink. And then—a flash of detail I had overlooked in my blind rage.

Beside the plastic tub, sitting right on the marble counter, was an unmarked, industrial-strength degreaser bottle that Margaret, the head nanny, must have left behind after cleaning the marble counters that morning.

Margaret.

Not Emily.

A cold sweat broke out across my back. Emily hadn't just been bathing my son; she had spotted the toxic hazard sitting right next to the sink, moved it out of reach, and scrubbed the basin clean before putting Zion in. And what had I done? I had screamed at her, accused her of overstepping, and thrown her out onto the street without a reference, a severance, or a listening ear.

"Mr. Whitaker?" the doctor asked, noticing my pale complexion. "Is something wrong?"

"Everything," I whispered, my phone already sliding out of my pocket. "Everything is wrong."
