Chapter 7 - The Poisoned AppleWhen I arrived home, the mansion was unusually quiet. Too quiet.

I dropped my briefcase in the foyer and strode toward the kitchen. The lights were dimmed, and the marble counters were spotless. Emily was nowhere to be seen.
"Emily?" I called out, frowning.
Suddenly, a faint, muffled sound echoed from the direction of the back pantry corridor—a frantic scraping noise, followed by a sharp gasp.
My heart seized. Adrenaline surged through my veins. I sprinted down the hallway, throwing open the heavy mahogany door leading to the walk-in security and supply archive.
Inside, pinned against the heavy metal shelving by a large, bulky figure wearing a dark maintenance uniform, was Emily. Her hands were clamped over her mouth, her eyes wide with terror, while a man held a cloth soaked in a chemical solvent dangerously close to her face.
"Get away from her!" I roared.
The figure spun around, startled. It was Victor, the estate's senior groundskeeper—whom I had reprimanded just two days ago for failing to secure the perimeter gates properly.
Before Victor could react, I crossed the room in a blur of motion, grabbing him by the collar of his jacket and hurling him backward with brute, unbridled force. He crashed hard against a metal storage rack, knocking down boxes of cleaning supplies before slumping unconscious to the floor.
I immediately turned to Emily, pulling her into my arms. Her whole body was trembling violently.
"Are you okay? Did he hurt you?" I asked, my hands gripping her shoulders, scanning her face for any sign of injury.
"I... I found him in the private wing," Emily gasped, tears spilling down her cheeks as she clutched my jacket lapels. "He wasn't doing maintenance, Marcus. He was copying the master security override keys onto a USB drive. When I confronted him, he attacked me."

I looked down at Victor's limp body, then spotted the open laptop on a nearby desk. The screen flashed a terminal download progress bar: TRANSFER COMPLETE: WHITAKER ESTATE BLUEPRINTS & VAULT CODES.
This wasn't a random break-in. It was an inside job, orchestrated by someone who wanted to dismantle my empire from the inside out—and Arthur's panicked warnings in the boardroom suddenly clicked into place like pieces of a deadly puzzle.
