Chapter 5 - The Partnership No One Expected"Come back," I said.

Emily looked up, startled. "What?"
"Come back to the estate. Not as a housemaid," I corrected immediately, holding up a hand to stop her protest. "As Zion's exclusive, full-time guardian and developmental director. Name your salary. Equity stake, housing, full medical coverage for your sister's tuition—anything you want."
Chloe's eyes widened behind her glasses, while Emily stared at me as if I had grown a second head.
"You can't just buy your way out of a mistake by throwing money at me, Mr. Whitaker," Emily said, her voice steady, carrying a fierce pride that money couldn't buy.
"I'm not trying to buy you out. I'm trying to make things right," I replied, stepping closer, meeting her gaze levelly. "My house is a fortress, Emily, but it's empty. Zion needs someone who cares for him with genuine warmth, not rigid schedules and corporate efficiency. And frankly... I need someone in that house who isn't afraid to look me in the eye and tell me when I'm wrong."
Emily stared at me for a long, agonizing minute. The ticking of a cheap wall clock was the only sound in the room. Finally, she looked over at her sister Chloe, who gave her a subtle, encouraging nod.
"I have conditions," Emily said softly.
"Name them."
"First, Margaret is gone for good. Second, I have complete autonomy over Zion's daily routine, nursery safety, and diet. No interference from your corporate board mentality. Third..." She paused, a faint, defiant spark lighting up her eyes. "You treat the staff like human beings, starting tomorrow morning."

I let out a slow breath, a rare, genuine smile tugging at the corner of my mouth.
"Deal."
