Chapter 2 - The Mansion in RuinsI rushed back to the Whitaker estate, leaving Zion resting under medical supervision. The drive was a blur of flashing traffic lights and curse words muttered beneath my breath. When the grand iron gates swung open, the mansion loomed before me like a silent tomb.

I burst through the front double doors, my voice echoing off the vaulted ceilings.

"Margaret!"

Footsteps echoed from the back hallway, and Margaret appeared, wiping her hands on her apron, looking confused and slightly defensive. "Mr. Whitaker? You're back early. Is everything alright with Zion? Why aren't you at the hospital?"

I closed the distance between us in three long strides, towering over her. The fury inside me was a live wire.

"Where were you this afternoon?" I demanded, my voice dangerously low.

Margaret blinked, taken aback by my tone. "I... I stepped out to grab the organic mail delivery from the front gate box. It only took five minutes!"

"Five minutes?" I roared, slamming my hand against the marble pillar. "Five minutes was all it took for you to leave a lethal, industrial-strength chemical bottle sitting right on the kitchen counter next where my son was going to be bathed!"

Margaret's face drained of color. "I... I put it away! I swear I put it in the utility closet!"

"You left it on the edge of the sink, Margaret! Emily found it. Emily—the housemaid you despise—saved my son's life by clearing out your criminal negligence, and what did I do? I fired her!"

Margaret staggered backward, her jaw slack. "Emily... she didn't say anything..."

"Because I didn't give her a chance to speak!" I spat. "Pack your things. You are fired, effective immediately. If you're still on these grounds in twenty minutes, I will ensure you never work another day in this industry."

As Margaret burst into hysterical tears, a sickening realization hit me: I had punished the savior and coddled the careless. And now, Emily was gone into the sprawling, unforgiving city of Chicago, with no money and my cruel words ringing in her ears.
