Chapter 11 - The Unseen Invitation

The evening air was crisp, carrying the scent of blooming jasmine from the courtyard gardens. Emily’s "Yes" still lingered on my lips, warm and absolute, but the reality of our new world was quick to knock on the door. Literally.
A heavy, metallic thud echoed from the front foyer.
I stood up, keeping Emily’s hand safely in mine as we walked back inside. Standing in the entrance was Miller, holding a stark black envelope sealed with a heavy crimson wax crest.
"What is this?" I asked, my brow furrowing as I took the envelope.
"It was just dropped off by a private courier, Mr. Whitaker," Miller replied grimly. "No return address. But the seal belongs to the Sterling Syndicate."
The name sent a chill down my spine. The Sterling Syndicate wasn't just a competitor; it was an elite, shadowy cartel of multi-billionaires who operated in the dark corners of global finance—a group I had formally rejected joining three years ago.
I broke the seal and unfolded thick, black cardstock. Silver embossed letters stared back at me:
Marcus Whitaker. You thought cutting off Margaret and Victor would cleanse your house? The rot runs deeper than you know. Bring your new 'partner' to the annual Gala this Friday night, or watch your empire crumble from the ground up. — S.

Emily read over my shoulder, her breath catching. "Who is 'S'?"
"Sterling," I murmured, my jaw clenching so hard my teeth ached. "The man who wants my head on a spike. And he knows about you."
