Chapter 12 - The Iron Rule of the SyndicateThe next morning, my corporate office felt like a war zone. I ordered my top cybersecurity teams to trace the courier drop, but the digital trail vanished into a maze of encrypted proxy servers in Zurich.

Arthur Vance—still walking on thin ice after his near-suspension—paced nervously in front of my mahogany desk.
"Marcus, you don't understand the Syndicate," Arthur stammered, wringing his hands. "They aren't just business rivals. They manipulate governments, crash currencies, and ruin lives overnight. If they’ve targeted you because of... well, because of your personal life..."
"Watch your next word carefully, Arthur," I warned, my voice cutting through the room like a razor.
"I'm just saying!" Arthur pleaded. "They know about Emily. They know she lives in your mansion. To them, she’s a vulnerability. A weakness they can exploit."
I leaned back in my leather chair, my eyes narrowing. "They think she’s a weakness. That is going to be their fatal mistake."
That afternoon, I brought Emily into my private study. Guards were posted outside the doors. I laid out a custom-tailored, midnight-blue evening gown across the sofa, alongside a velvet case containing a breathtaking diamond necklace that had belonged to my late grandmother.
"What is this for?" Emily asked, looking at the dress, then up at me.
"Friday night," I said softly, stepping closer to her. "The Sterling Gala. We’re going."

Emily didn't flinch. She looked straight into my eyes, her chin held high with that same fierce courage that had saved my son's life months ago. "They're trying to intimidate us, Marcus. If we walk into that room, we're painting a massive target on our backs."
"Let them try," I replied, taking her hands in mine. "We walk in together. And we show them that the Whitaker empire isn't built on fear—it's built on unbreakable loyalty."
