Chapter 10 - The Last CastleThe morning sun washed over the courtyard in a brilliant splash of gold and amber.

I stood on the second-floor balcony, holding a cup of black coffee, watching the gates below. A delivery van was parked outside, and Marcus was signing for a massive delivery of new playground equipment Sophie had ruthlessly lobbied for during our breakfast negotiations.

Footsteps echoed softly behind me.

I didn't need to turn around to know who it was.

Hannah stopped beside me, resting her hands on the iron railing, breathing in the crisp morning air. For a long time, neither of us spoke. We simply watched the children run across the lawn, chasing a stray butterfly.

"You know they're going to grow up eventually, right?" Hannah said quietly, her voice carrying a bittersweet note. "They won't stay in this castle forever."

"I know," I replied, taking a sip of my coffee.

"And when they do? When they find out what you really are? What we really are?"

I turned my head, looking down at her profile. The morning light caught the silver in her hair, and for a second, she looked like the frightened, desperate mother I had met in that apartment years ago.

"They won't have to wonder," I said firmly. "Because by the time they're old enough to understand the darkness of this world, I will have made sure the light they live in is untouchable."

Hannah looked up, meeting my eyes. There was no fear left in her gaze. Only a deep, unshakeable trust.

She offered a small, rare smile.

"You really are a hopeless romantic, Andrew Whitaker."

"Don't ruin my reputation," I muttered, though the corner of my mouth quirked upward.

Down in the garden, Sophie looked up, spotted us standing together on the balcony, and waved frantically with both arms, a bright, gap-toothed grin lighting up her face.

"Hurry up, Uncle Andrew!" she screamed across the courtyard. "Mason stole my crown!"

I set my coffee cup down on the stone ledge, looked at Hannah one last time, and smiled.

"Duty calls," I said.

And for the first time in my life, I ran toward the light.
