Chapter 7 - The New Rule"No, Sophie," I said, my voice steady and firm, carrying a promise that no force on earth could break. "You're staying right here."

She sniffled, wrapping her tiny arms around my neck and burying her face in my shoulder, just like she had that first day in the grocery store aisle when she handed me four dollars and sixty-three cents.

I stood up, holding her securely, while Marcus carried the twins inside away from the cold night air.

Hannah was still on her knees, staring up at me with hollow, defeated eyes as guards hoisted her to her feet to take her to the medical wing.

"What's going to happen to us?" she whispered, her voice barely audible over the wind.

"You broke the cardinal rule, Hannah," I said without looking back as I carried Sophie toward the warmth of the grand foyer. "You used a child as a weapon. For that, you will live under this roof for the rest of your days—clothed, fed, and protected better than any queen in this state."

She gasped, her eyes widening. "That... that sounds like a reward."

I stopped at the threshold of the heavy oak doors, turning my head back just enough for her to see the dead, chilling glare in my eyes.

May you like

"It's not a reward, Hannah. It's a life sentence. You will watch your children grow up safe, happy, and loved. But you will do it as a prisoner in a gilded cage, knowing every single day that you traded your freedom for theirs."

She slumped forward, letting out a ragged, agonizing sob as the heavy doors swung shut, sealing us inside.
