Chapter 5 - The Hunter's TrapJulian’s face went rigid. "What are you talking about?"

"You assumed that because I fell for your little grocery store trap, I lost my edge," I said, stepping forward, the warmth draining entirely from my face. "You thought bringing your little family play-acting here gave you all the leverage."

I raised two fingers and tapped my lapel mic.

Clack-clack-clack.

From the darkness of the surrounding treeline, the distinct sound of fifty laser sights snapping active echoed simultaneously across the courtyard. Red dots bloomed like drops of blood across the chests of Julian’s mercenary, the men in the SUVs, and Julian himself.

"Sniper team one, locked," a cold voice crackled through the security channel into my earpiece.

"Sniper team two, locked. Wind is zero. Target acquisition complete."

Julian’s eyes widened in horror. He spun around, looking frantically toward the perimeter walls where my personal shadow detail—men whose loyalty wasn't bought with money, but with blood debts—had him completely surrounded.

"You... you knew?" Julian stammered, the color draining from his face.

"I knew Hannah wasn't sick the second day I visited her apartment," I said, walking slowly down the remaining steps toward him. "Her pulse was too strong, her pupils didn't match someone suffering from systemic organ failure, and nobody leaves a four-month-old twin alone in a crib while they 'collapse' unless they're waiting for a specific phone call."

I stopped five feet away from Julian, towering over him.

"I kept you close because I wanted to see who was pulling your strings, Julian. I just didn't expect my old ghost to be stupid enough to walk right back into my house."

The mercenary holding Sophie panicked, his finger twitching toward the trigger.

Before he could pull it, a deafening crack split the night air.

Bang.

The mercenary’s weapon flew from his hand as a high-caliber round sheared the pistol in half, sending a shower of sparks into the stone. Before the man could even scream, Marcus sprinted forward with terrifying speed, slamming the butt of his rifle into the mercenary's jaw and sending him crashing to the pavement.

Marcus scooped Sophie and the twins into his arms in a single fluid motion, sprinting them away from the line of fire and behind the reinforced stone pillars.

"Sophie!" Hannah shrieked, breaking past Julian and running toward her children.

Two of my guards instantly stepped forward, blocking her path with rifles raised. She fell to her knees on the cold cobblestones, sobbing hysterically, realizing too late the nightmare she had willingly walked into.

Julian stood alone in the center of the courtyard, surrounded by red laser dots, every single escape route cut off.

"It's over, Julian," I said, drawing my 9mm from my shoulder holster and letting the heavy metal slide click into place.
