Chapter 6 - Blood and BrotherhoodJulian stared down the barrel of my gun, his chest heaving. For a long moment, the arrogant, untouchable mafia boss vanished, replaced by the cornered rat he had always truly been.

Then, slowly, a twisted, desperate laugh bubbled up from his throat.

"You think killing me solves this, Andrew?" Julian wheezed, wiping a drop of sweat from his forehead. "You think my organization ends with me? The syndicate I built isn't just in Milwaukee anymore. It's global. If I don't check in by midnight, a dead-man's switch triggers an entire data dump. Every shell company, every offshore account, every bribe paid to every politician and judge in this city goes public. You'll go down with me."

I tilted my head, studying him with cold detachment.

"Let it burn," I said softly. "I built this city from the gutter once, Julian. I can do it again. But you won't be around to see it."

I raised the gun higher, centering the sights right between his eyes.

"Andrew! Please!"

A voice broke the tension.

I looked over. Hannah was kneeling on the pavement, clutching her face, tears streaming uncontrollably down her cheeks. She looked up at me, utterly broken, all the pride and defiance completely stripped away.

"Kill me," she sobbed, bowing her head toward the stone. "Take everything. Put a bullet in my head. But let Julian walk. Or let the kids go. They are innocent, Andrew. I swear to God, Sophie didn't know. She was just a pawn. She thought you were really her friend."

The words hit me like a physical blow.

She thought you were really her friend.

I lowered the gun an inch, my eyes shifting to the corner of the courtyard where Sophie was currently burying her face in Marcus’s tactical vest, sobbing quietly while the big, terrifying enforcer gently patted her back with a hand that had broken bones.

I looked back at Hannah.

"You're right, Hannah," I said, my voice dangerously quiet. "She is innocent."

I turned my gaze back to Julian, who was watching me with a glimmer of desperate hope.

"Which is why," I continued, stepping right up to Julian, "she is never going to see either of you again."

Before Julian could react, I didn't shoot him.

Instead, I raised the butt of my pistol and brought it down hard across his temple with bone-crushing force. Julian collapsed instantly, his eyes rolling back as he hit the cobblestones in a heap of dead weight, unconscious and bleeding.

"Marcus!" I barked.

"Boss?"

"Take Julian and load him into the basement holding cell. Have the cleaner scrub the courtyard. And get a medical team down here for Hannah."

"And the kids?" Marcus asked, his voice unusually gentle as he looked down at Sophie.

I looked at the little girl. She peeked out from behind Marcus's shoulder, her big, tear-filled eyes locking onto mine with a mixture of terror and desperate hope.

I walked over, crouching down until I was eye-level with her. My hands, stained with the blood of an empire, felt clumsy and raw as I reached out and gently wiped a tear from her cheek.

"Mr. Andrew..." she whispered, her voice cracking. "Are you going to send us away?"
