Chapter 9 - The Final LedgerInside my private study later that evening, long after the children had finally been put to bed and the estate had settled into a quiet, heavy stillness, I opened the bottom drawer of my mahogany desk.

I pulled out a small, worn leather pouch.

Inside sat four coins and sixty-three cents.

The exact change Sophie had handed me across the counter three years ago.

I had never spent a single cent of it. It was the only money I had ever accepted that didn't come with blood on it. It was the currency that bought my soul back from the dark.

My phone buzzed on the desk. An encrypted text from an unknown number overseas.

Julian’s remaining assets in Zurich liquidated. Account closed. All threats neutralized.

I didn't bother replying. I deleted the message, locked the phone in the drawer with the coins, and leaned back in my leather chair, staring out the reinforced glass window at the twinkling lights of Milwaukee stretching out into the dark horizon.

Let the underworld think whatever it wanted. Let my enemies whisper in the dark about the ghost of Andrew Whitaker.

Let them come.
