Chapter 9 - THE SIEGE OF FIFTH AVENUE

"Intruders at the service elevator!" Marcus yelled, bursting into the study with his hand on his tactical holster. "They've bypassed the electronic locks!"
"Private security?" Robert demanded, grabbing a heavy brass paperweight from his desk.
"No," Marcus shouted over the growing din outside. "Federal marshals backed by private corporate contractors wearing Sterling Logistics insignia! Victoria Vance has a court order and an armed detail!"
Harrison cursed under his breath, drawing a secure satellite phone from his pocket. "Logan! If you're at the north gate, breach the building now! Victoria’s rogue security team is staging a forced extraction at the Manhattan penthouse!"
The study door shuddered as a heavy battering ram struck the outer wood.
Inside the bedroom, a frightened cry rang out.
"Grandpa!"
Robert didn't hesitate. He vaulted over the desk, throwing open the connecting door to Marina’s old bedroom. Sophia was sitting up in bed, wide-eyed and shaking, clutching the wool jacket around her shoulders as the sound of splintering wood echoed through the apartment.
"Sophia, look at me," Robert said, kneeling beside the bed and taking her small, cold hands in his. "Listen to me very carefully. You are safe. Nobody is taking you out of this room."
"Are they going to take me back to Uncle Mike?" she whispered, tears spilling over her eyelashes.
"Never," Robert vowed, his voice fierce, carrying the absolute authority of a man who had built empires and would burn them to ash to protect what mattered. "You are a Morgan. And nobody touches my family."
The main study door finally gave way with a deafening crash.
Heavy footsteps flooded the hardwood floors. Voices barked orders: "Secure the perimeter! Take the child under protective custody per Judge Miller's directive!"
Harrison stepped into the doorway of the bedroom, his pistol drawn and aimed at the threshold, flanked by Marcus and two of Robert’s senior guards.
"Drop your weapons!" a harsh voice commanded from the outer room.
A tall, impeccably dressed woman stepped through the ruined doorway of the study. Victoria Vance. Her hair was immaculate, her diamond earrings glinting under the lights, and a cold, triumphant smile curved across her lips.
"Put the gun down, Harrison," Victoria purred, stepping into the bedroom. Behind her stood four armed corporate contractors in tactical gear. "You're playing a game you don't understand. That child belongs to a defunct estate trust. Legally, she is property of the Sterling-Morgan Holdings board."
Robert slowly stood up from beside Sophia’s bed, stepping between the little girl and Victoria Vance.
"She is not property," Robert said, his voice dropping into a lethal register. "She is my flesh and blood."
Victoria laughed softly. "Proof, Robert? A handwritten letter from a dead teenager doesn't hold up against a certified family court injunction. Hand her over. Or watch your entire real estate portfolio dissolved by federal indictment before the sun sets."
Harrison stepped up beside Robert, raising his weapon slightly. "Victoria. Your accounts are frozen. Your offshore proxies have been seized by the DOJ. You have no leverage left."
"I have the judge," Victoria smiled coldly, snapping her fingers at the contractors. "Take the child."
The lead contractor stepped forward, reaching out a gloved hand toward the bed.
Sophia screamed, burying her face in the pillows.
