CHAPTER 11 — The Night the Lions Became Guardians

Rain began to fall.

Lightning flashed across the African sky.

The reserve became a maze of shadows.

The Ghost's men advanced with night-vision goggles and tranquilizer rifles.

Their mission was simple.

Capture the pride.

Kill anyone who resisted.

Emma, Daniel, and four rangers quietly moved through the forest toward the eastern ridge.

Then...

A single gunshot shattered the silence.

One ranger collapsed.

The ambush had begun.

Bullets ripped through the trees.

Everyone scattered for cover.

Emma crawled behind a fallen log, her heart pounding.

For the first time since the river...

She truly believed she might die.

Then the forest exploded with roars.

The black-maned male charged from the darkness like a living storm.

Behind him came the lionesses.

The young lion leaped onto one attacker's vehicle, smashing the windshield with his powerful paws.

Panicked poachers abandoned their weapons and fled.

Several climbed trees.

Others ran blindly into the rain.

The lions never attacked the fleeing men.

Instead...

They formed a living wall between Emma and the attackers.

Daniel stared in disbelief.

"They're protecting her."

One of the surviving poachers whispered through trembling lips,

"They remember..."

The Ghost watched everything from a nearby cliff through binoculars.

Instead of fear...

He smiled.

"This is exactly what I wanted."

He quietly opened the black metal case.

Inside...

Was a military-grade remote detonator.

He pressed the safety switch.

Far beneath the old wooden bridge crossing the river...

Hidden explosives armed themselves.

The bridge Emma's team would have to cross to escape.

The countdown had begun.
