CHAPTER 4 — The Lion That Refused to Leave

The world believed the story was over.

The tourists went home.

The poachers were arrested.

News stations called Emma Carter "the woman who survived the impossible."

But three weeks later...

She received a phone call that changed everything.

"Miss Carter?"

The voice belonged to Daniel Mwangi, the head ranger of the reserve.

"I think... you need to come back."

Emma frowned.

"Why?"

There was a long silence.

"One of the lions keeps coming to the river every morning."

Emma smiled politely.

"I'm sure that's normal."

"No," Daniel replied quietly.

"He's waiting."

Two days later, Emma stood once again beside the same river where she had nearly lost her life.

The floodwaters had disappeared.

The grass had grown greener after the rain.

Everything looked peaceful.

Almost too peaceful.

Then Daniel pointed toward the opposite bank.

"There."

Standing beneath an old acacia tree was the same enormous black-maned male lion.

He wasn't hunting.

He wasn't resting.

He was staring directly at Emma.

For nearly ten minutes...

Neither moved.

The tourists around them whispered nervously.

Suddenly...

The lion stood.

Every ranger instinctively reached for their rifles.

"Don't shoot," Daniel ordered.

The lion walked slowly toward the river.

Step by step.

Until he stopped exactly where Emma had rescued the cub weeks earlier.

Then he looked at her...

Turned around...

Walked a few yards...

Stopped...

And looked back again.

Almost as if he wanted her to follow.

Daniel swallowed hard.

"In twenty-three years here..."

"I've never seen anything like this."

Emma hesitated.

Every instinct told her to stay where she was.

But curiosity won.

Keeping a safe distance, she slowly followed the lion along the riverbank.

None of them noticed they were being watched.

Far away...

Hidden on a rocky hillside...

Someone raised a pair of binoculars.

One of the escaped poachers smiled.

May you like

"So..."

"The woman came back."
