CHAPTER 5 — The Trap Hidden in the Grass
The lion led Emma nearly half a mile from the tourist road.
Daniel and two armed rangers stayed close behind.
No one spoke.
The silence felt heavy.
Finally, the lion stopped beside a dense patch of tall grass.
He didn't move.
He simply stared at the ground.
Emma looked carefully.
At first, she saw nothing.
Then...
A tiny cry.
She rushed forward.
Hidden beneath broken branches lay another lion cub.
This one was alive...
Barely.
Its hind leg was tightly wrapped in thick steel cable.
A poacher's snare.
The wire had cut deep into the flesh.
Blood stained the grass.
"Oh no..."
Emma whispered.
The cub trembled violently.
Daniel cursed under his breath.
"They've been setting illegal traps again."
The mother lion appeared only a few yards away.
Instead of attacking...
She lay down quietly.
Watching.
Waiting.
Almost as though she understood Emma was there to help.
Using a rescue knife from the ranger's pack, Emma carefully cut through the steel cable.
The terrified cub cried out.
The lioness immediately stood.
Every ranger tensed.
But instead of charging...
The lioness gently nudged the freed cub toward Emma.
The little lion pressed its head against Emma's leg for just a moment before limping back to its mother.
Even the veteran rangers stood speechless.
Daniel shook his head slowly.
"I don't think they're asking for help anymore."
"I think..."
"They're trusting you."
But before anyone could respond...
A distant engine echoed through the valley.
Another truck.
Then another.
Daniel's radio suddenly crackled.
"Emergency!"
"We've found armed men entering the reserve from the northern gate!"
The poachers had returned.
And this time...
May you like
They weren't coming for one cub.
They were coming for the entire pride.
