CHAPTER 14 — One Last Reunion
A full year passed.
Emma returned to Africa for the anniversary of the rescue.
Not because the media invited her.
Not because she wanted attention.
She simply wanted to say goodbye.
She stood alone beside the river where everything had begun.
The water flowed gently beneath the morning sun.
She closed her eyes.
"Thank you," she whispered.
"For letting me walk away."
A breeze moved through the tall grass.
Then came a familiar sound.
A low, powerful roar echoed across the valley.
Emma slowly turned around.
Standing on the opposite bank was the young lion she had rescued as a cub.
He was fully grown now.
Larger.
Stronger.
His golden mane had begun to darken around the edges.
He wasn't alone.
Beside him stood three playful cubs, tumbling over each other in the grass.
Behind them rested a proud lioness.
The young male looked at Emma for a long moment.
Neither crossed the river.
Neither needed to.
One of the little cubs suddenly splashed into the shallow water.
The young lion calmly nudged the cub back toward the shore, just as a patient father would.
Emma laughed through tears.
The tiny cub glanced curiously at her before disappearing into the grass with the rest of the family.
The young lion remained for one final moment.
He lowered his head.
The same quiet gesture he had made years before.
Then he turned...
May you like
And vanished into the endless African wilderness.
It was the last time Emma ever saw him.
