Chapter 12 - THE PUPPETEER IN THE SHADOWS “The billionaire board member who pitied her at the gala... was the mastermind who ordered her mother’s death!”

The data extracted from the vault’s master server was a nuclear bomb waiting to detonate.
Claire and Eleanor sat in the secure nerve center beneath the riverbed, reviewing the encrypted logs. Beside them, Deloitte’s lead forensic investigator stared at the screen in utter disbelief.
"It wasn't Vanessa," Claire murmured, tracing a line of offshore transactions on the wall monitor. "Vanessa was just a foot soldier."
"Look at the master account holding Vanguard’s debt options," Eleanor pointed to a signature key encoded into the Cayman registry. "Vance Capital International. Owned entirely by Lord Victor Vance."
Claire felt a cold shiver trace her spine. Victor Vance—the elder statesman of the hotel’s board. The man who had looked away with a pained expression when security escorted Claire out of the gala. The man who had given Claire her first stuffed bear on her fifth birthday.
"He didn't look away out of pity," Claire realized, her knuckles turning white against the edge of the desk. "He looked away because he was checking his watch. He expected the hotel to go into default that exact night."

"Victor was my father’s business partner fifty years ago," Eleanor explained, her voice hardening. "When I built the Grand Halcyon, he wanted forty percent. I gave him eight. He waited twenty-two years to take the remaining ninety-two, using Vanessa as a wedge to drive Arthur into bankruptcy."
"Then we don't just defend the hotel, Mom," Claire turned to her mother, eyes burning with icy determination. "We destroy Vance Capital before the stock market opens on Friday."
