Chapter 2 - THE LOCKOUT AT DAWN “He thought he was disciplining his daughter... then his keycard flashed RED in front of the press!”

By 7:30 a.m., news of the midnight freeze had rippled through the financial district like a quiet tsunami.

I arrived at the Grand Halcyon in a tailored charcoal suit, accompanied by Miriam Cole and two uniformed off-duty officers turned private security. The morning fog was still clinging to the river, but a small crowd of local journalists and morning commuters had already gathered near the hotel’s iconic brass revolving doors.

Dad’s black Maybach screeched to a halt at the curb. He leapt out, followed closely by Vanessa, who was wearing dark sunglasses to hide her puffy eyes from last night’s breakdown.

"Claire!" Dad shouted, marching toward the entrance. "Stop this foolishness right now! I'm calling an emergency executive board meeting for 9:00 AM. We will reverse this transfer under duress!"

"There is no duress, Arthur," Miriam Cole spoke up, pulling a leather briefcase open. "The trust terms were absolute, notarized twenty-two years ago upon Eleanor Bennett’s passing. Claire is the sole trustee. Any executive decision made without her signature since her thirty-fifth birthday is legally null and void."

Vanessa tried to push past the security guards stationed at the brass doors. She pulled her keycard from her handbag and swiped it furiously against the executive access scanner.

BEEP. BEEP. BEEP. Red light.

"What is the meaning of this?!" Vanessa screamed, glaring at the head of hotel security, Marcus—the same guard who had been forced to escort me out the night before. "Marcus! Override this lock immediately! Fire this woman!"

Marcus stepped forward, but he didn't look at Vanessa. He looked at me, took off his cap, and bowed his head respectfully.

"I'm sorry, Mrs. Bennett," Marcus said quietly. "Ms. Claire updated the security protocol at 6:00 AM. As the legal owner of the land and majority shareholder, her access list is the only one recognized by the system. Yours and Mr. Bennett’s credentials have been suspended pending an audit."

A quiet gasp rippled through the gathering reporters. Cameras began flashing rapidly.

"You're firing me?" Dad’s voice broke, a look of utter betrayal washed over his face—the same face that had watched silently while I was cast out twelve hours prior. "I built this brand, Claire!"

"Mom built this hotel," I said, stepping up to the threshold and looking down at him. "You just ran it into debt trying to buy Vanessa a penthouse in Dubai and an art gallery in Paris. Step back, Dad. You're blocking my guests."
