Chapter 17 - THE ROOFTOP RECKONING “Her broken father stood on the ledge at midnight... asking for a forgiveness she couldn't give!”

At 11:45 PM, as the financial world reeled from the news of the short squeeze, Claire’s phone rang. It was Marcus, his voice breathless with panic.

"Ms. Claire! Come to the roof deck immediately! It’s your father!"

Claire sprinted to the top floor, pushing through the heavy exit door onto the rainy roof terrace.

Arthur was standing on the narrow stone ledge over the eighty-story drop, his clothes soaked through, holding a silver pocket watch that Eleanor had given him on their wedding day.

"Dad!" Claire called out, keeping her distance as wind swept across the roof. "Step back!"

"I lost everything, Claire," Arthur wept, his voice drowned out by the thunder overhead. "Vance took my money. Vanessa took my pride. And I threw away the only daughter who ever cared about this family. I have nothing left."

Eleanor stepped onto the roof, her black trench coat flapping in the gale. Arthur looked at her, his eyes hollow with despair.

"Eleanor..." Arthur whispered. "You came to watch me jump?"

"No, Arthur," Eleanor said, her voice steady despite the storm. "I came to tell you that jumping is the easy way out. Dying doesn't pay back the debts you owe to this hotel, or to Claire."

Arthur looked down at the street eighty floors below, where police sirens flashed like tiny red embers. "I can't go to prison, Eleanor. I'm too weak."

"Then don't go as a criminal," Claire took three slow steps forward, extending her hand. "Step down, Dad. Testify against Vance’s global network. Spend the rest of your life setting the record straight. That is the only way you will ever earn the right to be called a Bennett again."

Arthur looked at Claire’s outstretched hand, trembling uncontrollably. Tears mixed with rain on his face. Slowly, painfully, he reached out and took his daughter’s hand, stepping back onto the safety of the stone terrace.
