Chapter 6 - THE FATHER’S HIDDEN BETRAYAL “She thought her dad was just an innocent victim... until she opened his private vault!”

With Vanessa behind bars and Julian in custody, the immediate threat had passed. But something still didn't make sense.
Why had my father been so quick to side with Vanessa over the past six months? Why had he allowed her to isolate me so completely if he didn't know about the embezzlement?
I called Dad to the hotel the following afternoon. He looked like a shadow of his former self—his suit hanging loosely on his frame, dark circles under his eyes, sitting in the armchair across from my desk like an accused man awaiting sentence.
"Claire," he began, his voice raspy. "I am so sorry... I was blind. Vanessa manipulated me. She made me believe you were trying to push me out..."
"I don't buy it, Dad," I said, leaning back and resting my elbows on the desk. "You were a brilliant hotelier for thirty years. You survived three market crashes. You don't just 'forget' to check basic financial audits for four straight years unless you wanted not to see them."
He swallowed hard, looking down at his hands.
I reached into my drawer and pulled out a bank statement that Miriam had uncovered an hour prior from Dad's personal, offshore trust in Liechtenstein.
"You knew about Vanguard Holdings," I stated flatly.
Dad froze.
"You weren't being scammed by Vanessa, Dad," I continued, feeling a cold, hollow ache open in my chest. "You were using her. You let her take the heat for siphoning money so you could build a tax-sheltered exit fund for yourself before the hotel’s debt caught up to you. You were going to let the Grand Halcyon fail, blame it on Vanessa’s poor management, take the insurance payout and your offshore cash, and retire to South America!"
"Claire, listen to me—"
"And where did that leave me?" I interrupted, my voice trembling with suppressed rage. "You threw me out of the gala because you knew if I stayed, if I took over on my thirty-fifth birthday as Mom intended, I would find your offshore accounts!"
May you like
Dad lowered his head into his hands, unable to deny it.
"You didn't just stand by while Vanessa destroyed me," I whispered. "You handed her the knife."
