Chapter 9 - THE HIDDEN VAULT “She tore down the wall in the river warehouse... and found what her mother was really hiding!”

With Thorne defeated and Dad forced into early, disgraced retirement in exchange for my non-prosecution agreement regarding his offshore accounts, peace finally settled over the Grand Halcyon.

Or so I thought.

Two weeks into the hotel’s new employee-cooperative restructuring, Marcus called me down to the oldest part of the building—the sub-basement river warehouse that Mom had preserved from the original 1920s structure.

"Ms. Claire, during the structural inspection for the new foundation repairs, the crew broke through a hollow brick wall behind the old boiler room," Marcus explained, leading me down the damp, stone stairs with a flashlight.

We reached the cavernous basement. A sledgehammer hole revealed a heavy, silver steel vault door embedded directly into the riverbed bedrock.

"Is there a combination?" I asked, my heart racing.

"No," Marcus said, pointing his torch at the locking mechanism. "It’s a dual-biometric scanner... installed twenty-two years ago."

I approached the scanner. The glass plate was covered in decades of dust. I wiped it clean with my sleeve, took a deep breath, and pressed my right thumb against the sensor.

CLICK. BEEP.

A green light flashed.

GENETIC MATCH CONFIRMED: CLAIRE BENNETT.

SECONDARY IDENTIFICATION REQUIRED.

"Secondary?" I whispered.

Before I could process what that meant, a voice spoke from the shadows of the staircase behind us—a soft, calm, authoritative voice that I hadn't heard in over two decades.

"It requires mine, Claire."
