CHAPTER 3 — “The Signature That Turned a Husband Into a Prisoner”

Daniel watched Emily sign the papers with a smile so calm it almost looked holy.
For one perfect second, he believed everything was finally his.
The mansion.
The company shares.
The insurance money.
The life he had planned with Vanessa.
He leaned down and kissed Emily’s forehead.
“You have no idea how much this means to me,” he whispered.
Emily looked up at him with tired eyes.
“Oh, Daniel,” she said softly. “I know exactly what it means.”
Before he could understand her words, the hospital door opened.
Michael stepped in first.
Then the lawyer.
Then two police detectives.
Daniel’s smile froze.
“What is this?” he snapped.
The lawyer lifted the folder Daniel had just handed Emily.
“These are not transfer papers anymore, Mr. Carter. Your wife just signed a legal protection order, a financial freeze, and a statement confirming attempted fraud.”
Daniel’s face drained.
Emily slowly sat up against her pillow.
“You should have checked the papers before you smiled.”
Daniel stumbled backward.
“You set me up?”
Emily’s eyes filled with tears, but her voice stayed steady.
“No, Daniel. You set yourself up the moment you planned my death.”
Then Michael placed a phone on the table.
A recording began to play.
Daniel’s own voice filled the room.
“Once she signs the insurance papers... everything belongs to us.”
Daniel lunged for the phone, but a detective grabbed his arm.
At that exact moment, Vanessa walked into the doorway wearing sunglasses and a designer coat.
She stopped cold when she saw the police.
Daniel shouted, “Run!”
But it was too late.
Vanessa screamed as officers blocked the hallway.
Emily stared at the woman who had helped destroy her marriage.
But the real shock came when the surgeon entered behind her.
He wasn’t angry.
He wasn’t confused.
He looked terrified.
Because Emily’s investigator had found something even worse.
Daniel and Vanessa had not only planned to steal Emily’s money.
They had bribed someone inside the hospital to weaken her medication.
Emily looked at Daniel one last time.
“I loved you when I had nothing,” she whispered.
“And you tried to kill me when I had everything.”
Daniel opened his mouth to deny it.
But before he could speak, Vanessa screamed from the hallway:
“Don’t blame me! It was his idea from the beginning!”
