CHAPTER 5 — “The Man Behind the Murder Plot Wasn’t Daniel… It Was His Father”

Emily couldn’t sleep.

The photograph lay on the table beside her bed.

Her father...

Standing shoulder to shoulder with Daniel’s father, Richard Carter.

Both men were smiling.

But on the back, the handwritten message haunted her:

"Emily was never the target."

The next morning, Michael hired a forensic document expert.

The ink was over twenty years old.

Someone had written that message long before Emily ever met Daniel.

"Who was the real target?" Emily whispered.

The investigator sighed.

"I think your father knew he was being hunted."

Within hours, they reopened Emily’s late father’s private safety deposit box.

Inside were old business contracts, faded newspaper clippings, and a dusty VHS tape labeled:

DO NOT TRUST RICHARD CARTER.

Emily's hands trembled as the tape began to play.

Her father appeared on the screen, looking exhausted.

"If you're watching this, I may already be dead."

Emily burst into tears.

Her father's voice continued.

"Richard Carter isn't just my business partner."

"He's the man who betrayed our family."

Twenty-five years earlier, the two men had built a billion-dollar real estate empire together.

But when Emily's father discovered Richard had been laundering money through fake construction projects, he threatened to expose him.

Days later...

A warehouse caught fire.

The financial records disappeared.

Three witnesses died.

The case was ruled an accident.

But it wasn't.

Richard walked away richer than ever.

Emily's father secretly transferred ownership of the family's hidden fortune into a trust that only Emily could control after his death.

"No matter what happens," the recording ended,

"Never trust anyone with the Carter name."

Emily froze.

Daniel hadn't created the conspiracy.

He had inherited it.

Just then, Michael's phone rang.

It was the investigator.

His voice shook.

"Richard Carter's private jet just landed."

Emily frowned.

"Where?"

May you like

"Here."

"And he asked to meet you... alone."
