Chapter 1 - The Nine Words That Shattered the Carters

The crystal-clear water of the Carter Manor infinity pool churned wildly as Emily’s fingers slipped from the wet travertine border. Her lungs burned, her vision blurring under the blinding afternoon sun. Above her stood Evelyn Carter, her mother-in-law, eyes cold and unyielding, diamond rings sparkling like shards of ice.

"Stay where you belong!" Evelyn’s voice rang out, sharp and devoid of mercy. "In the depths. You were a nobody when you crept into my son's life, and you will leave it as a memory."

Emily reached up again, her fingernails scraping uselessly against the smooth stone. "Please... Evelyn..." she gasped, swallowing chlorinated water as her strength failed.

Suddenly, the heavy glass doors of the patio slid open.

Daniel Carter walked out onto the terrace, holding a massive bouquet of long-stemmed red roses—a gesture meant to celebrate their wedding anniversary. But the moment his eyes locked onto the scene, the vibrant red flowers slipped from his grip, scattering across the grey stone deck like droplets of fresh blood.

"Mother! Get back!" Daniel’s voice boomed with a rage Evelyn had never heard in her son’s thirty years.

Before Evelyn could react, Daniel sprinted across the deck. He shoved his mother aside with brutal force, sending her staggering against the outdoor marble pillars. Without hesitating, Daniel dove headfirst into the freezing water. Within seconds, his strong arms wrapped around Emily’s waist, hauling her limp, shivering body to the surface.

He pulled her onto the deck, wrapping his custom suit jacket tightly around her trembling shoulders. "Em... look at me. Breathe. I'm here. I’ve got you," he whispered frantically, brushing wet strands of hair from her pale face.

Once Emily gasped for air, leaning into his chest, Daniel stood up slowly. His tailored shirt was soaked, his eyes dark with a terrifying, deadly calm as he turned to face his mother.

Evelyn smoothed her silk blouse, attempting to regain her composure. "Daniel, don't look at me like that! The girl is unstable! She fell in! I was merely trying to—"

"Shut up," Daniel said quietly.

Evelyn gasped, horrified. "How dare you speak to your mother that way over a gold-digging outsider!"

Daniel took three slow steps toward her, his jaw tightly clenched. He looked down at Evelyn, his voice cutting through the silent estate like a razor blade.

"You just tried to murder your own biological daughter."

Evelyn’s face turned ghastly white. The color drained from her lips, her hands trembling uncontrollably as the silence between them stretched into an unbearable eternity.
