Chapter 5 - The Red Rose Trap

The air inside the abandoned Carter botanical conservatory was thick with the scent of decaying vegetation and damp earth. Glass panels shattered by past storms allowed the cold moonlight to slice through the darkness.

Daniel stepped into the center of the greenhouse, his hand resting near his coat pocket. Behind him, the faint sound of footsteps crunching on broken glass broke the silence.

"You always were too smart for your own good, Daniel," Evelyn’s voice echoed from the shadows. She stepped into the moonlight, holding a small silver revolver, her eyes hollow and frantic. Beside her stood two hired enforcers.

"Put the gun down, Mother," Daniel said calmly, not taking a single step back. "It's over. The police know Dr. Harrison spoke to the authorities before your men took him."

Evelyn laughed maniacally—a dry, bitter sound. "Over? Nothing is over! Do you think I spent thirty years building the Carter name just to let an orphan girl take it all? I gave you everything, Daniel! High society, power, wealth! And you threw it away for her!"

"You didn't build this for me. You built it for your ego," Daniel replied coldly. "And you missed the biggest truth of all, didn't you?"

Evelyn frowned, lowering the gun slightly. "What truth?"

"Why do you think I carried a bouquet of red roses to the pool yesterday?" Daniel asked, his voice dripping with icy irony.

Evelyn froze. Red roses were the signature mark of his late father, Charles Carter—a symbol Charles used whenever he uncovered a betrayal within his inner circle.

"Father knew," Daniel stated, taking a step forward. "Before he died ten years ago, he left a sealed codicil in his master will, locked in a vault that could only be opened on my thirtieth birthday. Which was yesterday."
