Chapter 7 - The Trial of Evelyn Carter

Three months later, the scandal that gripped high society reached its climax inside the packed courtroom of the State Supreme Court. Cameras flashed outside as the trial of the century drew to a close.

Evelyn Carter sat at the defense table, wearing a plain orange jumpsuit, looking aged and defeated. Across the aisle sat Daniel and Emily, their hands tightly interwoven.

The prosecutor stood before the jury. "Ladies and gentlemen, the evidence is absolute. Falsification of records, attempted murder, financial fraud, and the tragic assassination of Charles Carter. Evelyn Carter built a life on deception and was willing to drown her own flesh and blood to keep her secrets buried."

When the jury returned after less than two hours of deliberation, the verdict was unanimous: Guilty on all counts.

The judge slammed his gavel down. "Evelyn Carter, for your monstrous actions, you are sentenced to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole."

As the bailiffs stepped forward to handcuff Evelyn, she turned toward Daniel and Emily. Her face twisted into one last bitter smile.

"You think you’ve won, don't you?" Evelyn whispered loudly enough for the front row to hear. "You think you get the fairytale ending, Daniel? Look at your wife! Look at the fortune you sacrificed your own mother for! You don't even know the final joke your father left behind!"
