Chapter 3 - The Mistress’s True ColorsFor a long moment, the only sound was the hum of the airport HVAC system. Daniel stood frozen, the heavy luxury watch on his wrist suddenly looking like heavy iron shackles.

Jessica’s face twisted from smug amusement into pure, unadulterated venom. She shoved Daniel hard against his own luggage cart, sending a suitcase crashing to the floor.

"You said you were a senior partner!" Jessica shrieked, her high-pitched voice piercing the terminal. "You said you owned half the company! You told me your wife was a penniless nobody!"

"Jess, baby, wait—let me explain—" Daniel pleaded, grabbing at her silk sleeve, utterly pathetic.

"Don't touch me, you broke fraud!" she spat, ripping her arm away with a force that left red marks. She turned her fury on me, stepping right up to my stroller line with venom in her eyes. "And you! You pathetic cow, you set us up! You trapped him!"

"Trapped him?" I laughed, adjusting the pink blanket over my sleeping middle triplet. "Jessica, sweetheart, I didn't trap him. I gave him enough rope to hang himself. And by the looks of it, he tied a double Windsor."

Two burly security guards in dark suits suddenly materialized on either side of Daniel. They didn't ask questions; they grabbed his arms with practiced efficiency, hoisting him upward.

"Wait! You can't do this! Do you know who I am?" Daniel bellowed, thrashing uselessly as he was dragged away toward the exit.

"Yeah," one guard muttered dryly. "You're unemployed."

Jessica glared at Daniel as he was hauled off, realized she had hitched her wagon to a burning train wreck, and spun on her heel, storming off in the opposite direction without looking back once. Her expensive heels clicked furiously against the marble floor until she disappeared into a taxi line.

I stood alone with my three baby girls, taking a long, deep breath of sweet victory. But the war was far from over.
