Chapter 4 - The Midnight IntruderMidnight at the suburban estate was dead silent. I was sitting in the nursery, softly rocking our youngest daughter, Maya, when I heard the faint scrape of the kitchen window sliding open.

True to form, Daniel hadn't learned a damn thing. Stripped of his job, his company car, and his credit cards, he had managed to take a bus back from the airport, desperate to salvage whatever cash or valuables he could hide before the formal divorce papers hit.
I gently placed Maya back in her crib, smoothed down my pajamas, and walked quietly down the dimly lit hallway.
The kitchen light was off, but the moonlight illuminated a familiar silhouette rummaging frantically through the kitchen drawers. Drawers where my jewelry and emergency savings used to be.
"Looking for something, Daniel?"
He jumped nearly a foot in the air, whirling around with a silver soup ladle in his hand like a weapon. When he saw it was just me, standing calmly by the doorway with my arms crossed, his shoulders slumped in a mix of relief and boiling rage.
"Helen! You scared the hell out of me," he whispered harshly, stepping away from the ransacked drawers. "Look, I need my passport. And I need access to the joint account. Be reasonable. If we settle this quietly, maybe I won't drag you through a messy court battle."
I let out a soft, humorless chuckle. "A messy court battle? Daniel, look around you. You broke into a house you no longer own, tracked mud across my clean kitchen floor, and you think you have leverage?"
"It's my house!" he hissed, stepping closer, his face darkening with a dangerous expression I had never seen in our five years of marriage. "I worked for Vance Global! I earned this life!"
"You earned a pink slip and a one-way ticket to ruin," I replied coldly, reaching behind my back and flipping the wall switch.

The overhead kitchen lights blazed on. Standing by the living room archway weren't police officers—though they were waiting outside—but two senior partners from Vance Global’s corporate legal team, flanked by a court bailiff.
Daniel froze, staring at the legal binders in the lawyer’s hands.
