Chapter 11 - The Echo of the PastThe crisp autumn air carried the scent of wet asphalt and fallen leaves as my baby girl, Chloe, let out a soft yawn in her stroller. Walking down the quiet suburban sidewalk, it was hard to reconcile the peace of my current life with the violent nightmare of the previous year.

Yet, the legal fallout of the Sterling scandal was far from over.
Even behind bars, Ryan refused to accept his defeat. My attorney had forwarded a flurry of handwritten letters over the past three months—rambling, desperate appeals masking as apologies. He claimed he was the victim of corporate conspiracy, that Vanessa had bewitched him, and that I owed him a chance at rehabilitation.
I didn't read past the second sentence of the first letter. I handed the rest directly to the prosecutor handling his upcoming financial appeals.
"Penny for your thoughts?" Maya asked, stepping up beside me with a cup of hot coffee and handing one to me. She eyed my profile with a protective sisterly gaze. "You look miles away, Em."
"Just thinking about the hearing tomorrow," I replied, taking a warm sip. "Vanessa’s final sentencing. The defense is trying to shave five years off her sentence by claiming she was mentally unstable due to 'emotional distress' caused by Ryan."
Maya scoffed, rolling her eyes so hard she nearly tripped over a crack in the pavement. "Emotional distress? She was the one who poured the gasoline and struck the match. If anyone deserves emotional distress, it’s you and Chloe."

"Don't worry," I said, a cold, confident smile touching my lips. "The prosecution has the digital forensic report from the porch camera server. Her little act won't hold up for a second."
Little did I know, Vanessa’s defense team had one final, desperate card up their sleeve—one designed to strike at the very heart of my newfound peace.
