Chapter 4 - The Digital Trap"Recognize that voice, Ryan?" I asked softly.

Ryan’s eyes darted toward the door, checking to see if anyone in the hallway was listening. He swallowed hard, his Adam's apple bobbing violently. The casual, oily confidence he had worn on the front steps had completely evaporated.

"You're recording me?" he hissed, stepping closer and lowering his voice to a dangerous whisper. "Are you out of your mind? You're turning a domestic dispute into a legal warzone over a stumble?"

"A stumble," I echoed, tilting my head. "Strange word for a push that a high-definition 4K camera captured from three different angles."

Silence descended on the room. It was so thick you could cut it with a scalpel.

Ryan stopped breathing. For all his corporate brilliance, for all his meticulous planning of his secret double life with Vanessa, he had completely overlooked the most fundamental rule of modern paranoia: smart homes never sleep.

"The... the camera was offline," he blurted out, a desperate edge bleeding into his tone. "The firmware update last week crashed the local hub. It didn't record anything."

Maya let out a sharp, mocking bark of laughter. "Oh, honey. Keep digging that grave. You look great in a suit, let's see how you look in prison orange."

"It recorded, Ryan," I said, holding up my phone so the blue light illuminated my face. "Not only did it capture Vanessa’s hands hitting my shoulder, but it also captured your lovely little conversation by the mailbox where you coached her on her alibi before the ambulance even turned the corner. The audio is crisp. The video is pristine."

Ryan’s hand twitched toward his pocket, his instinct screaming at him to grab my phone and smash it against the tiled floor. But Maya stepped squarely between us, her arms crossed, her eyes narrowed into slits of pure hatred.

"Touch her or the phone," Maya whispered, her voice trembling with rage, "and I will personally take a pipe wrench to your BMW."

Ryan pulled his hand back, his chest heaving. He looked at me—really looked at me—as if seeing a stranger for the very first time. The quiet, compliant wife who used to pack his lunches and manage his schedule was gone. In her place sat a woman who had just looked into the abyss and decided to push back.

"What do you want, Emily?" Ryan whispered, his voice trembling with defeated malice.

"I want you to go home," I said quietly. "And tell your little girlfriend to start packing her bags. Because by morning, the police are going to have a copy of that footage. And after that... my divorce lawyer is going to take everything you own."
