Chapter 9 - The Final VerdictTwo months later, the courtroom was quiet.

I sat at the plaintiff’s table beside my attorney and Maya, wearing a sharp navy blue maternity blazer that hid the slight rounding of my stomach. My baby was growing, safe, and strong, defying every dark prediction Vanessa had whispered into the cold night air.

Ryan walked into the courtroom in shackles, his hair graying at the temples, his shoulders permanently hunched. He looked smaller, older, and hollowed out.

He caught my eye across the aisle. For a second, his lips parted as if he wanted to speak—to ask for forgiveness, to plead for mercy, or perhaps to try one last desperate lie.

I didn't flinch. I didn't look away. I simply stared at him with the cold, absolute clarity of a woman who had walked through the fire and emerged unbreakable.

The judge’s gavel came down with a sharp, echoing crack.

"Ryan Sterling, based on the overwhelming digital evidence, financial corruption, and your complicity in the attempted murder of your spouse, this court sentences you to twelve years in federal and state custody with no possibility of parole for the first eight."

A collective murmur rippled through the gallery.

Ryan slumped forward, burying his face in his hands as the bailiffs stepped forward to lock the handcuffs around his wrists.

Vanessa’s sentencing hearing was scheduled for the following week, where the prosecutor was pushing for fifteen years due to the premeditated nature of the arson.

As the guards led Ryan past my table toward the heavy oak exit doors, he paused for a fraction of a second, his voice a broken whisper.

"Emily... please."

I didn't answer. I didn't need to.

The past was ash. The future belonged to me, and to the little girl growing safely beneath my heart.
