Chapter 14 - The Counter-AttackFor three long seconds, the room felt devoid of oxygen.

I looked at Arthur Vance’s sweating face. I saw the desperate, trapped panic in his eyes—and I understood everything. Arthur wasn't just Vanessa’s witness; he was trying to save himself. Ryan’s embezzlement hadn't happened in a vacuum. Arthur had been knee-deep in the firm's illegal slush funds, and when Ryan fell, Arthur’s own neck was on the chopping block. They were trying to paint me as a mastermind criminal to distract from their own white-collar crimes.

Maya started to stand up, her face burning red with fury. I reached out, caught her wrist, and pulled her back down.

I calmly smoothed down my jacket, leaned over to my attorney, and whispered three words into his ear.

My lawyer smirked, stood up smoothly, and addressed the judge.

"Your Honor, we welcome this unexpected testimony. In fact, we move to admit into evidence a complete digital forensic extraction of Mrs. Sterling’s personal cloud drive, containing the exact date and time she discovered the affair—which was precisely forty-eight hours before she was pushed down the stairs."

My lawyer walked over to the digital display screen and tapped his tablet.

Instantly, a giant timeline flashed across the courtroom monitors. It showed the exact timestamp of when I opened the hotel confirmations on Ryan’s laptop, followed by my immediate call to a divorce attorney—and crucially, not a single communication with Arthur Vance or any corporate entity.

"Furthermore," my lawyer continued, his voice ringing with absolute authority, "we would like to submit a recorded phone call subpoenaed from federal custody this morning. A conversation between Arthur Vance and Ryan Sterling, discussing how to fabricate a conspiracy theory to discredit Mrs. Sterling in exchange for hush money."

Arthur turned violently pale. He clutched the edge of the witness box, his mouth opening and closing like a fish out of water.

The courtroom speakers crackled to life. Ryan’s voice boomed through the speakers: “If you can convince the judge Emily set us up, Artie, we might beat the fraud charges. Just make her look like the bad guy!”

The gallery gasped. Judge Thomas slammed his gavel down, the sharp crack echoing like a gunshot.
