Chapter 16 - Building the FortressThree years later.

The spring breeze carried the scent of blooming jasmine across the manicured lawn of my new home—a stunning, light-filled modern farmhouse nestled in a quiet, private cul-de-sac just outside the city.
There were no stone steps leading to the front door. Just a wide, flat, welcoming wooden porch equipped with the latest, high-end security system money could buy.
Inside, three-year-old Chloe was running down the hallway with a plastic tiara on her head, laughing hysterically as Maya chased her with a plush teddy bear.
I stood at the kitchen island, finishing up the final paperwork for my new interior design firm. Within two years of the divorce, using the liquidated assets from Ryan’s frozen accounts and my own sheer determination, I had built a thriving business from scratch. I was no longer the quiet, dependent wife who packed lunches and ignored red flags. I was a successful CEO, a fiercely protective mother, and a woman who commanded respect.
My phone chimed on the granite countertop.
It wasn't a text. It was an email notification from the federal correctional facility upstate.
Automated Notification: Inmate Status Update.
I paused, tapping the notification out of sheer curiosity.
Ryan Sterling had been transferred to a maximum-security prison following the expansion of the federal fraud investigation that brought down Arthur Vance and the rest of the firm's executives. He was broke, abandoned, universally reviled, and facing another decade behind bars with zero chance of early release.

I swiped the notification away without opening it.
I didn't care about him anymore. He wasn't a ghost haunting my past; he was just a distant, pathetic memory of a lesson well learned.
