Chapter 9 - The Reckoning

The police sirens wailed in the distance—not local cops bought off by the syndicate, but federal agents triggered by the automated silent alarm Anna had routed through her secret terminal override.

Berto stood over Dominic’s motionless body, then slowly turned to face Anna. He looked exhausted, broken, and older than his thirty-seven years. He dropped his weapon, letting it clatter against the floor.

"You called the feds," he said quietly.

"I called the Department of Justice," Anna corrected, wiping a smudge of soot and blood from her cheek with the back of her hand, her emerald dress ruined, her hair wild. "Not to arrest you for your empire, Berto. But to hand over Dominic's syndicate on a silver platter. The Cayman accounts are frozen. The federal task force has every transaction record Dominic used to frame my father."

Berto stared at her, stunned. "You... you helped me take down Moretti?"

"I helped myself get closure," she stepped toward him, her jaw set with fierce determination. "And I proved that I was never just your clumsy secretary, Berto Castiano. I saved your life."

"You did," he whispered, closing the distance between them. He reached out, his hand gently cupping her cheek, his thumb brushing away a tear she hadn't realized she’d shed. "I'm sorry, Anna. For all of it. I should have trusted you."

"You're an arrogant, controlling mafia boss," she whispered back, a faint, watery smile touching her lips. "It's a medical condition. I'm not sure there's a constitutional clause for it."

He let out a low, ragged chuckle, pulling her against his chest in a desperate, fiercely protective embrace.
