Chapter 11 - The Empire's New Blueprint

The morning light cut through the tinted floor-to-ceiling windows of the penthouse office, illuminating specks of dust dancing above polished mahogany. Anna stood by the glass, nursing her third cup of dark roast, watching the Manhattan skyline wake up. For six months, they had walked a tightrope between a criminal past and a legitimised corporate future, but today felt different. Today was the official audit by the federal oversight committee—the final hurdle before the Castiano holding company could scrub the last vestiges of mafia control from its balance sheets.
"You're pacing," Berto’s voice broke the rhythmic click of her heels. He was seated at the main desk, reviewing a stack of digital restructuring proposals, his sleeves rolled up to reveal forearms corded with muscle and faint scars. "If you wear another hole in my Italian wool rug, I’m going to have to expense it to your department."
"I'm not pacing, I'm strategizing," Anna retorted, turning sharply. "And your rug can survive a little friction. Unlike your blood pressure if the SEC investigators find that discrepancy in the European logistics portfolio."
"There is no discrepancy," Berto replied calmly, locking his laptop screen. "I had our legal team scrub every routing number twice. We’re clean, Anna. For the first time in three generations, a Castiano enterprise is completely, legally clean."
Anna crossed her arms, studying him closely. At thirty-seven, the hardened, untouchable mob boss had softened at the edges, though the lethal predator beneath the tailored suit remained coiled and ready. "It feels weird. No burner phones, no coded manifests, no panicked capos calling at 3 AM to say someone got dropped in the East River. What are we even supposed to do with ourselves?"
"We run a multi-billion-dollar global logistics firm," Berto said, standing up and closing the distance between them. "And if that bores you, we can always recreate your clumsy file-dropping routine on the executive floor."

Before Anna could deliver a suitably sarcastic reply, the heavy oak doors of the office burst open without a knock.
Vincenzo, Berto’s former right-hand man and current head of corporate security, rushed in, his face pale and slick with sweat. "Boss. We have a problem on the docks. Terminal 4."
